Kamal is Fellow member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a member of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India. He also holds a doctorate in Financial Management. He has over 40 years of experience in the field of professional policy making, consultancy & academics. He was the Technical Director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India for eighteen years where he handled all technical activities of the Institute including Accounting and Auditing Standards, expert opinions, research and consultancy. He also served as Technical Advisor to the Indian members of the International Accounting Standards Committee (now IASB) and the International Auditing Practices Committee (now IAASB).

He has been a member of high level policy-making committees/study groups of government and other regulatory bodies e.g. Committee on Depreciation of the Company Law Department, Committee on Accounting Policies for Public Sector Undertakings, Committee of RBI on Financial Statements of Non-banking Financial Companies, Committee of RBI on Bank Audit, Committee of SEBI on Accounting for Mutual Funds etc. He has been faculty on many international programmes including those of the Asian Development Bank and American Accounting Association.
